COY Eyewear › Magazine › MYKITA An Inside Look MYKITA An Inside Look COY Eyewear visits the Berlin manufactory of MYKITA, exploring how a former kindergarten became one of the most disciplined and culturally aware eyewear studios in the world. Beginnings in Prenzlauer Berg In 2003, four designers took over a small daycare building in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg. The word *Kita*—short for kindergarten—gave the project its name, MYKITA. From the start, design, prototyping, and production stayed under one roof. Today, more than two hundred specialists from thirty-five countries work inside MYKITA HAUS. Each frame passes through over eighty manual stages, a process that ensures continuity between design intent and finished object. It is a workshop built on precision and collective authorship. What Happens in the Workshop MYKITA’s process combines technical invention with deliberate restraint. Stainless steel, recycled from medical-grade remnants, is laser-cut into ultra-thin sheets and shaped by hand. The brand’s proprietary material, MYLON, is produced through selective laser sintering, creating lightweight structures without waste. Even the acetate comes from Eastman’s Acetate Renew, made with cellulose from industrial biowaste. Every frame is tested for flexibility, recovery, and balance on the face, turning engineering into comfort rather than display. Conversations Across the Table Collaboration functions as a kind of research. With 032c, MYKITA explored perception under the city’s neon light. With Rimowa, it examined the shared logic between luggage shells and eyewear architecture. With Carla Fernández, it linked Mexican craft traditions to digital fabrication. Each partnership expands the vocabulary of the brand while preserving its discipline. For COY Eyewear, these collaborations reflect the same principles we value: design that communicates intelligence, culture, and use.
